Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars Main Logo

Mafia Wars is a Facebook application that can be played worldwide. The application was designed by Zynga and receives constant updates from the company. It is compatible with most browsers. Mafia Wars holds and maintains a rating of about 3.6 and is one of the most popular games on Facebook. The game takes place primarily in New York, Cuba, Bangkok, Russia, and Brazil where players can lead a Mafia and attempt to become the best player in the game. Players can do jobs, fight other Mafias, and buy equipment to better their adventures. The game is crime-based, but does not support any of the activities mentioned in.

GameplayEdit

Mafia Wars is a timer-based browser game. Players have three rechargeable stats: Health, Energy, and Stamina. Each stat can be upgraded every time a player levels up, and are used while playing the game. The stats recharge in a certain amount of time. Players also can go to different places to play in. There are four locations available, New York, Cuba, Bangkok and Moscow, Russia. One new location, Las Vegas, will be available in later updates.

MafiaEdit

Players can recruit each other to be in their Mafia. The amount of players in anyone's mafia can be infinite, although most players prefer to have theirs at or above 501. 501 is the maximum amount of mafia players anyone is able to use in a fight. More mafia also gives more benefits, some which will be explained later.

JobsEdit

Jobs are one of the parts of Mafia Wars. Each job requires some energy, some requiring as low as 1, while others well into the 40's.

All jobs give the player experience, money, and job mastery. Experience counts towards leveling up, and money is always good. Job mastery is also gained in jobs. Job mastery is a scale in which how effective a player is at doing a job. When a player has done a job enough times, he or she is considered to have mastered that job and gains a skill point.

Occasionally a player is rewarded a collection item or loot item. All jobs give out a collection item, but loot items are only given out in specific jobs.

ConsumablesEdit

Consumables are job items that are used in jobs, but go away once they are used. There are several consumables, including Untraceable Cell Phone, Concealable Camera, Illegal Transaction Records, Blackmail Photos, and Politico Corrupto. The first four can be obtained by doing jobs themselves, while the last one can be obtained through a Cuban business (see Properties and Business section)

FightingEdit

Players can fight each other to show their Mafia Strength. Players can either fight each other directly, start wars against each other, take out people on the hitlist, or rob each other. Each time a player attempts an attack, they use 1 stamina. Fighting also takes a number of hitpoints. In all attack modes, players cannot attack when below 20 hitpoints or when they have no stamina.

Fighting DirectlyEdit

Results of a fight.

When fighting directly, players are given a list of other players to fight in. These players are within the level range of the fighting player, although any person can attack another. The hitpoints level of these players cannot be lowered once below 20. The items of the players are put into effect. Items with higher attack and defense are used; the more high attack/defense items a player has, the better chance they have of winning the fight of their opponent. The two skills, attack and defense, are the largest factors in determining a winner. Players can attack and defend with up to 501 Mafia Members, each one using one weapon, one armor, and one vehicle.

After the winner and loser is determined, the system gives out a random damage number. This can vary from 0 to 29, and takes out the indicated amount from the hitpoints stat. Winners get money from the losing player's account (a maximum of $72,000 from each attack) but the losing side can lose up to $100,000. In addition, players can find loot and consumables. The cash lost is calculated by about 10% of the loser's cash on hand or up to $100,000, whichever is less.

WarsEdit

This feature is in Beta mode and is subject to change.

To settle disputes, players can start wars against each other. This consists of the Top Mafia of each player having the option to attack the opposing Top Mafia. Once all the Top Mafia are eliminated, they go for the kill, the Mafia Leader. Attacking the Top Mafia doesn't take any hitpoints or stamina. Each player can only attack one Top Mafia player in the fight.

Some players have the same player in each of their Mafias; this player in both Mafias can betray one player and attack the Top Mafia of the player he or she is betraying.

HitlistEdit

The hitlist is used when a player who is annoyed of another one sets a bounty on the player they are annoyed of. Anyone on the hitlist can be attacked. In this fighting style, players can be lowered below 20 health until 0. The player that sets the person's health to 0 gets the bounty set on that player. Putting a player on the hitlist requires at least $10,000. A 20% security fee will be deducted from this.

Gaining experienceEdit

Some players use a strategy called 'riding the hitlist' in where they purposely put themselves on the hitlist and gain experience points when other players attack them but lose. When riding the hitlist, a player can earn up to 44 experience points. Often times, players ask their friends to put them on the hitlist, or otherwise start and/or participate in 'Hitlist me' threads in Mafia Wars-related forums.

RobbingEdit

This feature is being updated by Zynga.

Robbing is entirely different from the other two fighting styles. It deals with taking a portion of money (which is scaled on the properties' level) from a 9x9 grid. Although there seems to be some amount of luck, it compares the player's combined attack stat to the defending player's defense stat. Robbing is often used when players attempt to go to war against each other.

Properties and BusinessesEdit

IGNORE THIS SECTION. IT IS VERY OUT OF DATE AND SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR REFERENCE. A property or business is used to generate money. Each location, New York, Cuba, and Moscow, all have different ways of getting money, although the latter two are exceedingly similar.

New YorkEdit

In New York, players can buy any four undeveloped lots: Abandoned Lot, Commercial Block, Prime Downtown Lot, and Beachfront Property. While these themselves don't generate much money, they can have buildings built on them to improve income. The price to buy a lot goes up by 10% of the base value each time a lot is bought, going up 100% if 10 lots are bought simultaneously.

Buildings above Rent-House level can be protected to give more defense against attacks from the now-defunct Robbing skill. The cost to protect them goes up as more of each property is bought. Protecting properties makes them harder to be robbed by other players. A successful rob against a protected property will deal more damage to the robbing player. A property can be protected for five hits, then it has to be re-protected. After those 5 hits, the property is declared 'unprotected' and can be robbed normally. Players should protect their property regularly.

These are the lots and buildings available in New York with respective costs and income:

  • Abandoned Lot: $5,000 to buy, $100 an hour
  • Commercial Block: $50,000 to buy, $300 an hour
  • Prime Downtown Lot: $1,000,000 to buy, $2,000 an hour
  • Beachfront Property: $4,000,000 to buy, $8,000 an hour
  • Rent House: Abandoned Lot, $300 an hour
  • Italian Restaurant: Abandoned Lot, $700 an hour
  • Apartment Complex: Commercial Block, $5,000 an hour
  • Valu-Mart: Commercial Block, $10,000 an hour
  • Marina Tourist Shops: Beachfront Property, $50,000 an hour
  • Office Building: Prime Downtown Lot, $150,000 an hour
  • 5-Star Hotel: Beachfront Property, $200,000 an hour
  • Mega Casino: Prime Downtown Lot, $300,000 an hour

Cuba and MoscowEdit

In Cuba and Moscow, the traditional property system is replaced by the business system. Each player may own five businesses plus a special one that generates a different kind of property. The businesses in Cuba generate Cuban Pesos (except for the bribery ring) while the business in Russia generate rubles. These businesses can be upgraded in three different ways. The first is through the type of product they make; better products generate more money. The second is through upgrading their capacity, and the third is the amount of the product made every hour. Unlike New York properties, the resources generated have to be harvested manually.

Mafia StoreEdit

The Mafia Wars store contains items that can be used in fighting and jobs. Generally, better items cost more than less quality items. The New York Store uses U.S. Dollars, the Cuban Store uses Cuban Pesos, and the Moscow Mafia store requires Rubles. Cuba's store has generally more higher-leveled items, at the cost of money being hard to obtain on the island. Items bought can be sold for half of the price they were bought with.

BankEdit

The bank can be used to store money. Each deposit requires a 10% laundering fee. Withdraws are free of charge. Money in the bank, strangely, will not accumulate interest. The bank is often used to protect money from players that attack other players and steal their money. Both New York and Cuba have different banks, as money cannot be transferred from one to another.

Godfather PointsEdit

Godfather Points are bonus reward points. They are given every so often when players level up. Players can also earn them by paying real money or completing offers listed. The reward points can be used to purchase special benefits, such as rare items, stat refills, and others. These offers are made by third-party companies, not by Facebook. Players are warned that some of these may be scams.

Leveling UpEdit

Every player earns experience when doing a job or fighting. When players earn enough experience, they level up. Each level up unlocks new jobs, new items, and occasionally a Godfather point. The main interest of leveling up is to get skill points. Skill points can be spent on increasing a player's Mafia's attack, defense, energy, hitpoints, or stamina. Players earn 5 skill points, and can spend them on the listed skills.

LotteryEdit

The lottery is a weekly activity done that players can participate in. Players can fill out lottery tickets, hoping to get a prize at the end. Every day, each player is rewarded a free lottery ticket. The prizes are as follows:

  • 1 matching number: A loot piece, usually a consumable
  • 2 matching numbers: An unused lottery ticket
  • 3 matching numbers: A lottery collection piece
  • 4 matching numbers: 10-20 Godfather points
  • 5 matching numbers: 200-1000 Godfather points

Players can also buy lottery tickets from The Godfather for 5 points. A maximum of 50 lottery tickets can be entered each week.

GiftingEdit

Gifting is an activity of many players, where players that belong to the same Mafia can give gifts to one another.

CollectionsEdit

Collection pieces are obtained by doing jobs. These pieces are collected within a set. Some sets include the Poker Chip set and the Beard Collection. When sets are completed, the player can vault them, getting a bonus of skills. Collection pieces can be added to a player's wishlist so that other players can see what they want. Players can give collection items to others as gifts.

BoostsEdit

Collections can be re-vaulted for boosts. Boosts give an extra bonus when doing jobs or fighting. Additionally, boosts can be bought in New York. A maximum of 20 boosts can be bought each day.

Loot ItemsEdit

Loot is obtained through jobs and fighting, occasionally by buying. Loot items are rare but are much more powerful than items that can be bought. Some loot items can be bought on the home page for 10,000 of the currency that the player is using on the land that they're in. This loot is rare and usually not as powerful as the other high-end loot items. Other items can be purchased with Godfather points.
